John Cooper Hathorn has produced an amazing study of the first settlers in Lafayette County, Mississippi that documents the period from 1836 until just prior to the Civil War. He captured family details such as the size of their land holdings, their agricultural and commercial endeavors, their schools, churches and even some descriptions of social life. These humble beginnings are the roots of a good bit of the current day culture here around Oxford. Much of this information would have been lost if not for this author's work.
