By 1870 the "taking" of the census had become a larger project in our growing nation. Plus, since the emancipation of slaves, the number of individuals to have given names, ages, birth locations and land holdings recorded grew dramatically in Lafayette County as in all of Mississippi. Lucky for us that the transcribers of this census also produced a surname index that is a great tool in finding families that started to spread out to farm larger and larger portions of the county. This is another census that you may find is best researched in a hard copy rather than online.
